Where is the 305 area code?
Area code 305 covers Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, the island part of Monroe County. That includes Miami, Hialeah, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Doral, Homestead, Key Largo, Marathon and Key West. The mainland part of Monroe County (mostly Everglades) is in 239, and Broward County to the north uses 954 and 754.

305 history: Florida’s first area code
When AT&T created the first North American area codes in 1947, the whole state of Florida got 305. The state was carved up over the following decades: 813 for the west coast in 1953, 904 for north Florida in the mid-1960s, 407 for Orlando and the east coast from Palm Beach to Brevard in 1988, and 954 for Broward County in 1995. Today 305 is back to its core: Miami-Dade and the Keys.
305, 786 and 645: one area, three codes
By the late 1990s Miami was running out of 305 numbers, so 786 was added as an overlay on March 1, 1998: a second code for the same area instead of a new split. The Keys joined 786 in 2001, and a third code, 645, went into service on August 4, 2023. Existing numbers never changed; a new line can get any of the three.
In practice, a caller with any of the three codes could be down the street or at the far end of the Keys. The area code tells you the region, not the neighborhood, and it can’t tell you whether a number is a mobile phone, a landline or a cloud phone line.
How to dial a 305 number
Because three area codes share the same area, local calls in Miami-Dade and the Keys are dialed with all 10 digits (area code + number); Miami-Dade has dialed this way since 1998. From elsewhere in the US or Canada, dial 1 + 305 + the number. From abroad, dial +1 305 and the number.
Why “305” means Miami
305 is more than a phone prefix. Miami wears it with pride: rapper Pitbull, born and raised in Miami, calls himself “Mr. 305,” and the number turns up in local brand and media names. For a business, a 305 number reads as long-established Miami, although a 786 or 645 number is exactly as local.
Got a call from a 305 number? Is it a scam?
A 305 caller ID only means the call claims to come from Miami. Scammers spoof local-looking numbers and pose as banks, utilities or government agencies. Hang up and call back on a number you look up yourself, never share verification codes or passwords, and report scam calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Is 305 the same as 786?
Geographically, yes. 305, 786 and 645 cover exactly the same area: Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. A call from a 786 number is just as local as one from 305; the code mostly reflects when the line was set up.
Can I still get a 305 number?
