Where is the 786 area code?
786 is a Miami area code. It covers all of Miami-Dade County, including Miami, Hialeah, Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Doral, Kendall and Homestead, plus the Florida Keys down to Key West. It is not a separate region: it overlays the original 305 area, and since 2023 both share the same map with 645.
What is an overlay area code?
Instead of splitting a region in two and forcing half the businesses to change their numbers, an overlay adds a new area code on top of the same area. Everyone keeps their existing number, and new lines can be assigned the new code. Miami got its first overlay, 786, on March 1, 1998, and the Florida Keys were added to it in 2001.
Why new Miami numbers get 786 (or 645)
Phone numbers are handed to carriers in blocks. Once 305 ran low, new Miami numbers came from 786. When 305 and 786 were both nearing exhaustion, the Florida Public Service Commission approved a third code, 645, which went into service on August 4, 2023. That’s why a brand-new Miami line today may show 786 or 645 instead of 305.

Always dial all 10 digits, even for a call across the street: 786 plus the seven-digit number. Overlays require 10-digit local dialing, which is why Miami-Dade switched to it in 1998. From elsewhere in the US or Canada, dial 1 + 786 + the number; from abroad, dial +1 786 and the number.
